Landscapes

Landscapes were the battleground. Torn between imitation of other artists; the demands of the market; and the desire to make personal works. They are emblems of a struggle for authenticity. The market wanted me to be something I am not. I cannot betray my integrity.

A painting shouldn't imitate a photograph. It becomes the work of a technician or computer or automaton, imposing nothing of the artist. There's no individuality.

I'm not after accuracy but personal expression. I want my work to function as self-portraits. If I'm melancholic or vulnerable then I want my paintings to show the torment, disappointment, insignificance. I want the intensity to come through. For them to have atmosphere and emotional weight.

Everything here is genuine and original.
